After years of battling contaminated water, the residents of Riviera Beach, Florida, finally have a reason to celebrate. The city has officially broken ground on a brand-new, state-of-the-art water treatment facility, marking a significant turning point in their struggle for clean and reliable drinking water.
But here's where it gets controversial: the journey to this groundbreaking moment has been riddled with complaints, lawsuits, and a deep-rooted distrust of the city's water supply. The ceremony, held on February 25, 2026, took place at 2391 Avenue L, just a stone's throw away from the current, aging water treatment plant. City officials and residents came together, shovels in hand, to symbolize the beginning of a new era.

The facility will initially process 14 million gallons of water daily, with the capacity to expand to 16 million gallons. Key features include a 5-million-gallon ground storage tank and new high-service pumps to ensure efficient water distribution. The project also includes an administrative building for operations and management staff.
Mayor Douglas Lawson emphasized the city's commitment to maintaining the current facility while the new plant is constructed. "We've already invested millions to keep the facility running, and we aim to sustain it for another 10 to 20 years. Our focus now is on preparing for the next water plant," he said.
However, the question of who will operate the new facility remains unanswered. The city is actively pursuing grants and additional funding to cover the $400 million cost.
And this is the part most people miss: the construction timeline. The city projects substantial completion by February 2029, with final completion expected by mid-2030. It's a long-term commitment, but one that promises to restore trust and provide clean water for the community.
Resident Scott Lewis, who previously expressed his distrust of city officials and found contamination in his drinking water, is now cautiously optimistic. He has installed a reverse osmosis system as a precaution, but the groundbreaking gives him hope.
