Devon's Promise School Engulfed in Massive Blaze: 15 Fire Engines Rush to Scene

A Devon school has been left severely damaged after a massive blaze engulfed it on Sunday afternoon. The Promise School in Okehampton was engulfed in flames and thick black smoke, prompting a swift response from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue.

Around 15 fire engines, along with specialist appliances, were dispatched to the scene. By 5.45 pm, the fire service confirmed the blaze had created a significant smoke plume and caused extensive damage to the building.

Sgt Tom Ottley, of Devon and Cornwall Police, stated that the entire school suffered significant damage. He assured the public that the fire was under control and there was no further risk to property or casualties.

Residents in the area described seeing thick smoke billowing across the landscape. Glennon Walters, who lives nearby, recalled his three-year-old son first spotting the smoke through their window. He noted that the smoke was dark, suggesting an industrial source.

The police urged residents in the Stockley Hamlet area to close windows and doors and avoid the area. Road closures were implemented, with traffic monitoring service Inrix reporting closures on Exeter Road and the B3260.

The Promise School, which was on term break, was expected to re-open on Monday. However, the school will now be closed for the immediate future, according to a message from principal Quentin Gunderson. Reform councillor James Grainger expressed relief that everyone was safe and no one had been hurt.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been confirmed, but it is suspected to be electrical, ruling out arson. The school specializes in special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and provides 100 places for students.

Local businesses, including a gym, restaurant, and foodbank, have offered support to affected families. Anyone working in the local area is urged to check travel information on Monday.
