Iran-US-Israel Conflict: Military Strikes, Assets, and Strategic Analysis (2026)

A Crisis Unfolds: Unveiling the Strikes and Military Might in the Iran Conflict

In a dramatic turn of events, the US and Israel have launched a series of strikes on Iran, marking the fourth day of an operation that claimed the life of its supreme leader. As hostilities persist with no clear resolution in sight, Sky News delves into the escalating conflict, mapping out the attacks and exploring the military assets at play.

A Regional Firestorm

Operation Epic Fury, initiated by the US, commenced with a deadly series of strikes on Saturday morning, resulting in the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei within his Tehran compound. Israel swiftly joined the assault, inflicting heavy casualties on Iran's military leadership through over 100 aerial strikes in just three days.

Nic Jenzen Jones, director at Armament Research Services (ARES), sheds light on the weaponry employed: "The US and Israel utilized a diverse range of precision-guided munitions. These included air-delivered weapons like the AGM-154 Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW), Blue Sparrow ballistic missiles, and various bombs ranging from 500 to 2,000 pounds. Additionally, surface-to-surface missiles were fired, including sea-based Tomahawks and land-based Precision Strike Missiles."

Iran's Retaliation

Iran is retaliating fiercely, deploying drones and missiles targeting Israel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Jordan, Oman, and Qatar. The US has confirmed the tragic loss of six service members, while an RAF base in Cyprus was also struck by a drone attack. This incident underscores Iran's ability to strike beyond its borders.

Iran's Reach: A Cause for Concern?

Iran's drone attack on RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus serves as a stark reminder of its military capabilities. According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies, Iran's longest-range missile, the Sajjil, has a maximum range of up to 2,000km (1,240 miles). This range is sufficient to reach Moscow or Athens but falls short of posing a direct threat to the UK.

However, the UK's base in Cyprus is well within the reach of not only the Sajjil but also Iran's Ghadr and Emad-1 missiles. This proximity raises questions about the potential vulnerability of British assets in the region.

Fighter Jets and Airbases: A Strategic Overview

Sky News' Data and Forensics team has meticulously plotted US and UK air bases in the Middle East and Europe, highlighting their potential role in launching attacks on Iran. Flight tracking data reveals the paths of 47 US military cargo and refueling planes traveling to and from the Middle East in recent days.

At least 15 of these planes passed through British bases, including four through Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. This site has gained prominence in recent headlines due to Donald Trump's criticism of the UK's plans to cede control of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

The Iran conflict has underscored the strategic significance of the joint US-UK military base. Initially, Sir Keir Starmer refused permission for the base to be used by the US for strikes on Tehran, emphasizing the delicate balance of international relations.

Satellite imagery captured on Sunday morning reveals at least 14 planes stationed near the runway, including six F-16 fighter jets and two P-8 Poseidon maritime spy planes. The remaining aircraft are transport models, such as the C-5 Galaxy and KC-135 Stratotankers, according to analysts at Jane's Defence Weekly.

The C-5, the largest transport aircraft in the US arsenal, is capable of carrying military vehicles and even fighter jets. Notably, the UK does not operate any of the aircraft models visible in the satellite imagery, except for the P-8 Poseidon.

As planes head towards the Middle East, America's air bases in Germany have noticeably emptied. Since February 23, 161 planes have landed at Spangdahlem and Ramstein air bases, while at least 246 have departed, resulting in an overall decrease of 52.

Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar has also experienced a significant outflow, with 20 more planes leaving than arriving. This base was anticipated as a potential target of Iranian counterattacks.

Meanwhile, planes have been accumulating at bases in Kuwait, Israel, and Jordan, suggesting a strategic buildup of forces.

Iranian Sea Power Under Attack

Satellite imagery reveals the aftermath of strikes at two Iranian naval bases. Fires can be seen at the military harbor in Bandar Abbas, the main headquarters of the Iranian Navy, which oversees the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. A burning ship, the Makran, is also visible in the image.

The extent of damage to the Makran, Iran's largest naval vessel and a floating base, remains unclear. However, if rendered inoperable, this would significantly impact Iran's naval capabilities.

The Makran is one of six Iranian ships tracked by Sky News using data from TankerTrackers, positioned near Qeshm island in the Strait of Hormuz. These ships have been observed on satellite imagery on three recent occasions, most recently on March 2.

Smoke can also be seen at the dock of the Konarak Naval Base, located on the southern coast of Iran. Strikes have been reported at two other navy installations, with Sky News mapping the facilities of the Iranian Navy, which are concentrated near the key Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz, between Iran and Oman, is a vital waterway for Iran and other oil producers in the Middle East, underscoring its strategic importance.

US Naval Presence

At least three US military ships are believed to be in the Persian Gulf, with an additional 12 positioned around the Middle East and Mediterranean. The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln was spotted within 200km (124 miles) of the coast of Oman on February 25, accompanied by an unknown ship over 200 meters in length, potentially used for replenishment or drills.

The largest aircraft carrier in the US naval fleet, the USS Gerald R Ford, was last seen on satellite imagery on February 27 in the Mediterranean Sea, approximately 400km (248 miles) from the coast of Cyprus. It was reportedly traveling with three US destroyers, capable of carrying more than 6,000 personnel in total.
