A major outage has plunged Belleville into darkness this morning, affecting a substantial portion of the city. The blackout began around 8:50 a.m. on Friday, hitting the downtown area and the southwest neighborhoods. Elexicon Energy estimates that between 500 and 5,000 customers are without power.

Belleville Police are advising drivers to proceed with extra caution, as numerous traffic signals in the southern parts of the city are out due to the outage.
